A Brief History of Cardiac Surgery in Southwest Florida

The first cardiac surgery in Southwest Florida was done by Drs. Robert Pascotto, and Michael Steier in October 1975. Since that time the surgical group has grown to 6 surgeons, 7 physician assistants and 6 perfusionists. The initial operations were all done at Fort Myers Community Hospital (later renamed Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center.) Dr. Sidell joined the group in 1977, Dr. Metke in 1981, Dr. Stapleton in 1987, and Dr. Hummel in 1990. Lee Memorial Hospital opened its cardiac surgical facilities in 1990. These were originally at the Cleveland Campus, and were moved to Health Park in December of 1992 at the time that facility was opened. Naples Community Hospital opened its cardiac surgical facilities in 1996.

The need for cardiac surgery has continued to grow throughout that time, and at the present time approximately 1500 open heart operations are done in Southwest Florida each year.
